What Gen122 Is

Gen122 is an illustrated archive of birds, story, and layers of meaning.

The name carries dual significance. At its deepest level, it points to Genesis 1:22, a meaning that grew over time as I came to see birds more clearly as the gift they are. It is also tied to a significant event in 2022 that set this in motion in very specific ways — something harshly jolting at the time, yet one that catapulted us to the intersection that led here.

Birds are at the center of this world, and pigeons in particular return again and again as the main character. Familiar, overlooked, and often misunderstood, they invite a closer look at their beauty, intelligence, humor, tenderness, resilience, mischievous antics, and history.

About the Work

The work begins with original photographs and close attention to real moments, real birds, and the posture, expression, relationship, symbolism, and quiet details many people pass by. Through painterly digital art processes, those photographs are transformed into art with the hope of carrying an idea or telling a story — some lighthearted, others with a deeper message.

Everything begins in the archive, which is always growing. We do not use clip art or computer-generated imagery for our designs, and the historical elements are gathered through ongoing research. Gen122 is a family business, grounded in shared values and a shared belief in the meaning behind the work and the joint effort it takes to bring it forward.

But the founder’s path — the one that inevitably led here — is personal, and I would like to share some of that in my own voice.
