Tesla’s Pigeons: The Genius Era is a research-rooted Gen122 design inspired by Nikola Tesla’s well-known affection for pigeons.
This piece reflects on a time when intellect, tenderness, and urban bird life shared the same frame. As this 1923 article describes, it was once an enjoyable habit of famous people to feed the park pigeons. That had been the norm for most of history, and only in the last century or so has it changed — making the negative views some hold of pigeons a deviation from much of documented history.
This is the first of many designs featuring Nikola Tesla, and within each we hope to convey something that is not commonly known. While you may hear familiar ideas about Tesla and pigeons, they are often depicted inaccurately — as if he only took up the habit late in life, in diminished old age. So here is your Tesla treasure: he loved pigeons all his life.
He fondly recalled his childhood on the farm and all the birds there, and he felt it as a kind of calamity when he moved away and missed them — beginning with their pigeons. Knowing this, it becomes easier to see one reason Nikola Tesla had such a strong affinity for the city pigeons.
The back introduces the theme through an archival-style newspaper treatment, while the front beautifully says it as it is: The Genius Era. And it was brilliant in more ways than one. Let’s learn from history.
