“I’ll Be Back” plays with a familiar phrase while pointing to something much older and truer: pigeons return. Homers, racers, companions, and feral birds alike carry that instinct in them. Their other return — to a rightful place of respect and value—is surely coming too.

This piece begins with a line people know, then opens into a larger idea. Pigeons have long been defined by return—through instinct, memory, orientation, and a homing ability still not fully understood. It also gestures toward restoration: the sense that these birds belong with us and will be understood again. Pigeons have been companion pets since the beginning of time and it’s mainly in the last century that has been disrupted. But in more recent years, many of us are taking a second look at these wonderful creatures. They’ll be back
